There are gorgeous family-friendly beaches at Broadstairs, which are perfect for lazy beach breaks, and many fish and chip shops up and down the coast offering a chance to sample the local catches of the day. Whitstable (45mins), with its picturesque harbour, is famous for its oysters and beach-huts, and is perfect for a little weekend celebrity-spotting.

The Romney Marsh, Dungeness and the Isle of Sheppey are havens for wildlife, with bird-watching centres dotted throughout. There is also the delightful Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, a steam railway line, which runs to the lighthouse at Dungeness.
